It is our privilegde and pleasure to welcome GPs from 27 countries to the 20th Nordic Congress of General Practice in Reykjavik which with over 1450 participants is one of the biggest Nordic congress ever.
The cooperation of the five Nordic Colleges of GPs in the Nordic Federation of General Practice has proved to be a fortunate arrangement which has strengthened the congresses and general practice in the Nordic countries.
We look forward to the congress where we’ll explore and discuss what general practice is all about in the Nordic countries. What have we been doing in the past and where will the future take us? Is general practice changing or is it still the practice from the core or the heart of medicine with the doctor-patient relationship at the center? Are we doing no harm and helping our patients towards health and happiness or is less medicine more health as Gilbert Welch has talked about? Are general practitioners the patients advocates they claim to be or are they playing parts in sexed-up medicine, where patients have been turned into customers like Margaret McCartney will discuss? These questions and many more will be addressed and we are excited to meet you and exchange ideas and challenge beliefs.
This congress is our first “paperless” congress and we believe that by doing so we are taking steps to being more environmentally friendly and we hope you will perceive this as a positive change and we encourage you to download our app where you can see the program, the abstracts and all the necessary information.
Last but not the least we hope you will enjoy your stay in Reykjavík and will be inspired by the midnight sun and the ambitious program that lies ahead at the 20th Nordic Congress of General Practice under the theme “From the Core, Changes and Challenges in Primary Care”

Harpa, the new conference and concert centre in Reykjavík opened in May 2011. The building is the ideal venue for various events, international conferences, conventions with accompanying trade shows as well as meetings. Harpa complies with the highest Icelandic thermal performance standards. Its advances in insulation and air-tight constructions make it one of the greenest conference centers in the world. These elements play a key role in minimizing energy use for heating and cooling and therefore reducing carbon emissions.
